Utah Spider Pest Control

May 30th, 2010 by Carl

Spider control in Utah is one of the most common concerns people have when it comes to pest control problems.

There are three spiders in Utah that are medically significant because of their bite.  Those are the black widow, the hobo and the yellow sac.  The brown recluse is not present in Utah contrary to the understanding of many people.

Extermiman® specializes in strategies for the control of poisonous and nuisance spiders in Utah.

Billbugs in Utah

Utah Billbug Control

Adult Billbug in Utah

Billbugs, what are they?

Billbug adults are a type of weevil.  They are also sometimes called “snout beetles”.

What should I know about billbugs?

Billbugs may cause damage to small or large sections of turf.  Adults emerge from hibernating and begin to become active around April and May when soil temperatures exceed 65 degrees F.  The females then begin to feed for a short period of time and then search out a suitable place to begin laying eggs.  Egg laying typically continues through August.  The larvae feed on the insides of grass stems hollowing them out.  Once the larvae pupates, the pupa may feed on the crown and roots of the grass.  Large populations of billbugs may do significant damage in a short period of time.

How can you determine if you have billbugs?

One trick used by many in our field perform a tug test.  Simply put you grab a handful of turf that looks damaged and pull it up.  If the turf stays intact and does not pull up easily it is normally a good indicator that the turf is drought stressed and simply need more water.  If on the other hand the grass peels away from the soil as if it has been scalped it may be billbugs.  If you observe the bottoms of the grass blades carefully you should notice the stems hollowed out and also see saw-dust like material (frass) collecting on the surface and insides of the hollowed out stems.

Control options.

Chemical control is generally the best option for immediate relief.  Do it yourselfers may purchase over the counter products labeled for this purpose.

With a one-time treatment and charge Extermiman® will guarantee the elimination of billbugs in your lawn all season long.

Turf managers should obviously implement healthy turf management practices to assist in warding of billbug attacks.

Organic Pest Control in Utah

May 17th, 2010 by Carl

Organic pest control options are available at Extermiman®.  Extermiman® uses EcoSMART® brand products.

The following comments are relayed directly from EcoSMART.

Can pesticides which are meant to be deadly to pests truly be safe to use around children, pets and the environment!

With EcoSMART, the answer is, “YES!”.Highly Targeted to Insects ONLY

First, our products have a unique mode of action that targets systems which exist in insects only. That means that our active ingredients which work on insects are harmless to mammals, birds and fish.

NO Toxic Residue

Second, all of our products leave no toxic residue and pose no exposure risk. This means that after the pest control is done, our products will not pollute ground water sources with harmful chemical residue.

100% SAFE, All-Natural Ingredients

Third, the basis of safety in our products are the ingredients themselves. All of the ingredients used in our products are either food grade and listed on the FDA GRAS (“Generally Regarded as Safe”) list or are commonly used in the food and beverage industry (this means they have no adverse effect on living organisms). No other household brand can make this claim.

Is EcoSMART as effective as conventional products?

YES! University research and field studies have proven EcoSMART’s botanical products are as effective as conventional pesticides in their ability to kill insects fast and provide effective control. EcoSMART pest control products have been used for more than a decade in professional and agricultural markets and have been proven to kill and control a broad spectrum of insects and other pests. In addition, unlike other botanical insecticides that use a single plant oil, EcoSMART’s formulas are comprised of patented plant oil blends that make the products significantly more effective against insects and other pests. Another key benefit is that, unlike many insecticides on the market, there is no known pest resistance to EcoSMART’s botanical active ingredients.

How safe are EcoSMART insecticides?

Most insecticides are required by EPA to have an extensive list of precautionary and first aid statements on their labels since they use synthetic chemicals as their active ingredient. EcoSMART products, however, don’t bear such warnings. That’s because the FDA classifies the plant oils used in EcoSMART products as “Generally Recognized As Safe” (GRAS) — the same label placed on approved foods and beverages. Additionally, the EPA classifies EcoSMART products as “Minimum-Risk” pest control products, a special category of EPA exemption offered for food grade ingredients. In fact, the active botanical ingredients found in EcoSMART products are the same ingredients commonly found in your spice rack! The EcoSMART active ingredient plant oils utilize a unique, proprietary targeted mode of action that attacks the central nervous system of insects, but have no adverse effect on humans or pets.

Extermination vs. Pest Control

May 16th, 2010 by Carl

Companies in our line of work are sometimes referred to as exterminators and/or pest control providers.  To exterminate something is to eliminate or to get rid of it entirely.  To control something is to suppress, subdue, dominate or to change something.

The two terms are both applicable in our industry and may be used appropriately at differing times depending on the target pest that is being pursued.

An example of extermination may be the goal to eliminate a bed bug infestation that has been introduced into a structure.  The goal of the “exterminator” regarding this pest problem would be to eliminate, as quickly as possible, this insidious insect.  Some pests only become a problem when they are specifically introduced by means other than the immediate outside natural environment to a structure.  These are usually the situations where the call for an exterminator and extermination of the problem is needed.  Pests that would come under this classification would include bed bugs and German cockroaches to name a couple.

Pest control on the other hand would take into account the fact that certain pests may continue to be a chronic problem because they originate from the immediate exterior environment or they are introduced into the structure on a recurring basis, therefore, measures are implemented in the long run to minimize the presence of  the target pest(s) by methods that are feasibly possible.  If somebody were dealing with spiders continually entering their home (possibly because of the age and dilapidation of the home), the requesting party may enlist the services of a pest control company to provide suggestions and treatment to reduce the amount of activity that would otherwise be present without pest control service.  Pests that fall under this category may include but are not limited to ants, earwigs, mice, spiders, wasps, etc.

Some pests may fall under both categories depending on geography, temperature and other factors.
